We are thrilled to announce that Melanie Nelsen, CPSM, a valued member of our Marketing Department, has been awarded the 2025 SMPS Marketer of the Year award! Melanie joined Horrocks in 2020 as a Marketing and Business Development Manager. Her exceptional talent and commitment quickly propelled her to the role of Regional Marketing Manager, Associate III. She also serves on the Board of Directors for SMPS.
Contributions and Impact

Melanie’s leadership skills, in-depth knowledge, and passion for the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry have been extremely influential to our firm's overall marketing strategy. She has not only been a key member of the Marketing Department but has also become a trusted advisor to Horrocks’ leadership team.
Melanie has become instrumental in our business development and proposal efforts. She has guided and created more streamlined proposal processes, improved our content strategy, and strategically targeted key markets. We are grateful and lucky to have her leadership and talent to support our business lines and our regions covering Colorado, Texas, and New Mexico.
For the past five years, Melanie has been involved in a wide range of pursuits throughout different business lines and markets. Two proposals she was particularly proud of were the New Mexico DOT Comanche Montgomery Design-Build Program Management and The Point, which is a large, highly visible project in the southern part of the Salt Lake Valley in Utah. Melanie worked with technical staff to create proposal themes that were carried through the proposal responses and project interviews, successfully landing both projects.
Lastly, she has supported Marketing Director, Sandi Lampshire, in successfully delivering multiple large alternative delivery pursuits. These complex pursuits involve a great deal of coordination and collaboration with the Lead Contractor and subconsultant pursuit team members.

Mentorship and Leadership
Throughout her years at Horrocks, Melanie has consistently demonstrated her passion for marketing and her dedication to thoughtful leadership. She has been a mentor to her peers, providing guidance and support within the company. Additionally, through her involvement with SMPS, Melanie has empowered other professionals to expand their knowledge and expertise, further showcasing her commitment to the growth and success of those around her.

Our leadership team, business development team, and staff know that Melanie is always ready to offer her support, from helping us strategize and position for projects to conversing with clients and learning something new for our systems. Her positive attitude and willingness to help are unwavering. If you know Melanie, you know she brings immense energy, enthusiasm, and kindness to everything she does.
“Melanie SPARKLES! She is energetic, always smiling, and always willing to learn and share new things to continue growing! Though I have not worked with her at a professional level, it is obvious to see she thrives knowing how organized and driven she is.” –Linda Hansen, Ensign Engineering and Land Surveying, Business Development Coordinator/former SMPS Utah President
